John Bishop practices as an Arbitrator, ADR practitioner and Dispute Board Member working from bases in Hong Kong, Singapore and London.
Since qualifying in 1971, John has been involved in all forms of dispute resolution, including arbitration, court litigation, adjudication, and other forms of alternative dispute resolution. John specialised in construction and engineering, mining, dredging, oil and gas and energy construction projects. Throughout his career, he represented clients at all stages of the construction process, including contract documentation, risk handling strategies, project counsel and conducting dispute resolution. John retired from Pinsent Masons LLP in order to practice as an Arbitrator, ADR practitioner and Dispute Board Member. In 2016, John became a member of Arbitration Chambers, Hong Kong and London.
John’s practice has had an international focus since the late 1970s. He has been involved with disputes and projects in many parts of the world, including Africa, South America, Western Europe, Eastern Europe and Russia, The Middle East, The Gulf, Asia Pacific and China. In 2003, he moved from London to Hong Kong. For four years, John also practised from Dubai. In 2007, he moved from Hong Kong to Beijing from where he specialised in disputes involving Chinese SOEs and other Chinese organisations.
John has a lifetime experience of arbitration acting as Arbitrator, Advocate (Counsel) and Solicitor in, he estimates, more than two hundred and fifty arbitrations under various domestic and international arbitration rules including ICC, LCIA, SCC, CIETAC, VIAC, HKIAC, SIAC, AFSA, DIAC, DIFC, SHIAC, ADCCAC and UNCITRAL. John was Chairman of the Joint Consultative Committee of the LCIA.
In 2025, John was invited to become a member of DB Chambers (A group of 20 Leading Dispute Board Practitioners)
John has been involved in ADR since the early stages of ADR in the UK and was Dean of the Faculty of Mediation and ADR. He has been recognized in the main directories for his expertise in the world of Mediation both as Mediator and Party Representative. He has been involved in more than 60 mediations.
His first experience of Dispute Boards was as the lead English Lawyer for the contractors building the Channel Tunnel in the early 1990s. He has been involved in more than 50 DB referrals both as Party Representative and DB member. He is a member of the Dispute Resolution Board Foundation.
John was awarded the Clare Edwards Award for lifetime contribution to construction law and was selected by Legal Business as the Experts’ Expert for Construction and Engineering.
