Leendert van den Berg joined the Bar in 1995 and has 30 years of experience as a construction and public procurement lawyer. Before joining the Bar, Leendert read Law at Utrecht University as well as at l’Université Robert Schuman in Strasbourg, France.
As partner at Severijn Hulshof advocaten, Leendert was and is involved in major construction projects and procurement proceedings. He is a Fellow of the chartered institute of arbitrators (London), the Malaysian institute of arbitrators as well as of the arbitrators’ and mediators’ institute of New Zealand. An active member of the international construction projects committee of the IBA since 2008, Leendert is part of a broad international network of construction lawyers from all over the world. He lectures regularly on topics like dispute resolution, construction law and procurement law. Leendert was a board member of the Association for Construction Law from 2016-2022.
Leendert’s practice includes both disputes (arbitration, mediation and litigation) as well as front-end contract drafting and negotiating. Being a partner of the boutique law firm Severijn Hulshof, solely dedicated to construction- and public procurement law, he brings a lot of hands-on experience of both the construction industry and the construction process to the table. He strives to reach the best possible outcome for his clients, whether this would be through litigation or a settlement. In this he advocates a practical, targeted, approach and aims to provide guidance for his clients in order to them to make optimal business decisions.
Examples of Leendert’s work include Fidic related disputes (airport, refinery), professional indemnity insurance cases (several major theatres, high-rises), contract drafting (major office building), infrastructural works (subway, tunnels) and public procurement disputes (both in construction and in IT related cases). Next to a number of domestic publications, he contributed to the recent edition of the practical guide to application Fidic contracts in Europe (Routledge 2023) and is a contributor to the authoritative domestic commentary series on public procurement law (Kluwer).
Next to his native language Dutch, Leendert has a full business proficiency in English and French.
Leendert is admitted at the bar of The Hague. He is a listed arbitrator of the NAI (Netherlands arbitration institute).
