Dr Niels Schiersing, LLD, is an independent international arbitrator specialising, inter alia, in disputes arising out of large and complex construction and engineering projects, both onshore and offshore. Dual qualified in Denmark (Advocate) and in England & Wales (Solicitor), he combines a civil law and common law background with more than three decades of experience in international arbitration.
He has been appointed in over 100 international arbitrations, frequently as presiding or sole arbitrator, under the rules of the ICC, LCIA, SIAC, SCC, DIAC, HKIAC, KCAB, AFSA, FAI, DIFC-LCIA and the Danish Institute of Arbitration (DIA), as well as in ad hoc proceedings, including under the UNCITRAL Rules. His practice encompasses the full range of legal and technical issues arising in large-scale construction and infrastructure projects—such as delay, disruption, acceleration, variations, defects, performance guarantees, suspension and termination—and he has extensive experience with all principal forms of FIDIC contracts.
His experience spans projects such as offshore wind farms, onshore and offshore energy installations, oil and gas facilities, extraction facilities (mining), production facilities, power generation, shipbuilding, transport and industrial infrastructure, and the construction of, e.g., exhibition centres, hotels, residential towers and large-scale commercial and residential developments.
Before becoming a full-time arbitrator, Dr Schiersing acted as counsel in approximately 150 arbitrations and litigations involving major international contractors, employers and engineering companies. He also accepts select appointments as adjudicator or mediator in commercial and construction disputes. He does not provide legal advice, expert opinions or consultancy services.
In addition to his arbitral practice, Dr Schiersing conducts legal research in comparative contract law, construction law and international arbitration. He is the author of a number of books and articles, including “Disruption Claims – Reduced Productivity as a Basis for Monetary Claims in Construction and Engineering Contracts” (2024).
