Professor Janet Walker CM is a chartered arbitrator based at Atkin Chambers in London, Toronto Arbitration Chambers, and Sydney Arbitration Chambers. She is a member of the Ontario Bar, and licensed legal consultant in New York State.


Janet has served as sole, presiding, and co-arbitrator in ICC, ICDR, SIAC, LCIA, DIAC, HKIAC, KCAB, PCA, and in ad hoc, commercial and investor-state treaty arbitrations and emergency arbitrator mandates. Many of her matters concern infrastructure projects, increasingly in the field of energy production through conventional and new technologies.


Janet is a member of the panels of AIAC, ACICA, BVI, CIETAC, DIAC, HKIAC, ICDR, JCAA, KCAB, LCIA, Shanghai, Shenzhen, SIAC and Ukraine, and she has a good working knowledge of Spanish and French. She is a member of the Ontario Bar, and licensed legal consultant in New York State.


Janet is past chair of the ICC Canada Arbitration Committee and founding member of CIArb Canada, Toronto Commercial Arbitration Society, and ArbitralWomen. She is a past officer of the IBA International Construction Projects Committee and member of the SCL North America, the Society of Construction Arbitrators, and the International Construction Law Association. She is also a member of ICCA and the Worshipful Company of Arbitrators.


Janet is recipient of the Ciarb Canada Award for Distinguished Service, and of the Order of Canada for her advancement of arbitration in Canada. For over 25 years, Janet has authored Canada’s main text on private international law, Canadian Conflict of Laws, cited in 400+ reported decisions; and she is general editor of works on civil litigation and complex litigation. She is an Executive Editor of the Canadian Journal of Commercial Arbitration and co-author of Commercial Arbitration in Australia under the Model Law 3ed, and The Laws of Australia: Arbitration. Janet was a member of the ICCA 2018 Sydney executive organising committee, and she is founding chair of CanArbWeek.


Janet is a Distinguished Research Professor of Law and past Associate Dean of Osgoode Hall Law School where she teaches courses in international litigation and arbitration. She was co-director 2014-18 of the Ciarb Oxford Diploma course; and she taught from 2017-2024 in the Stuttgart International Construction Law LLM programme. In 2024, she founded, as co-director, the Osgoode Professional Construction Law Masters Program.


Janet has taught as Leverhulme visiting professor at University College, Oxford; Hauser global law professor at NYU and NYU /NUS in Singapore; and visiting professor at universities in Australia, Israel, Italy, Croatia, China and, for thirteen years, Tunisia. She coached the Osgoode Vis Team for many years, including the year they prevailed in Vienna, and continues to serve as arbitrator at the competition.


Since 2010, Janet had been recognised in leading indexes, including Who’s Who Legal/Lexology (Thought Leaders, Canada and UK Bar), Chambers and Partners, and Best Lawyers.
